Do you clench (tightly hold your top and bottom teeth together) or grind (slide your teeth back and forth over each other) your teeth? This is a condition known as bruxism and many people do it during both day and night and are not even aware of it.
There are several different causes for bruxism, including:
Clenching the teeth puts pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around your jaw. The symptoms can cause joint problems commonly known as TMJ. Grinding can wear down your teeth and the sound can also be bothersome for your partner when you sleep.
The goals of bruxism treatment are to reduce pain, prevent permanent damage to the teeth, and reduce clenching as much as possible. Dr. Kissinger-Blakeley may suggest the use of an invisible retainer, occlusal guard (night guard), or orthotic depending on the severity of your condition. They can be made quickly and many insurance companies may cover a portion of the costs. As a free service, we are happy to contact them on your behalf to verify your benefits.
